With barbecue and upscale Creole now available within walking distance of food from Japan and the West Indies, St. Charles Avenue in the Lower Garden District has become the most unexpectedly eclectic restaurant row in the city.

It got more so Monday when Hoshun opened its doors for business.

The man behind it is longtime local restaurateur Steve Ho, who began working on the expansive, chicly appointed restaurant before the levees breached.

Ho, who runs Hoshun with his wife Alice, is the former proprietor of Jade East. He also is a former partner in Five Happiness. He said he sold his shares in that restaurant just before Hurricane Katrina to concentrate on opening Hoshun.

"We are not authentic Chinese food," Ho said of his restaurant. The menu instead mingles Chinese with Thai and Vietnamese, among other cuisines.

"We even have a small sushi bar," Ho said.

Hoshun is at 1601 St. Charles Ave., (504) 302-9716.
